NEW
ROMNEY NEWS
To mark changes to the organisation of the New Romney High
Street Traders' Association, the traders are reviving the
Marsh’s traditional dish of the Lookers' Pie.
“In the light of the recent changes made to the Traders'
Association we have decided to mark the occasion by celebrating
a part of Romney Marsh’s past, which people may not
be aware of. People know about traditional dishes from other
areas, such as the Bakewell tart, the Eccles cake, the Cornish
pastie and Cheddar cheese. Romney Marsh has its own traditional
dish, which is not very well known in the area, let alone
anywhere else.
"We want people to have something else to associate
with Romney Marsh. We hope that local restaurants and pubs
will get behind us and will start to make the Lookers’
Pie available for local people and visitors. We hope Lookers’
Pie will attract more people to the area, which will give
them the chance to explore the area and to get to know it
better.
"First and foremost we want to revive the Lookers’
Pie before it is lost forever.
"Before the first pies can be made we need to track
down the definitive recipe, we already have some varying
versions. We are hoping local people will contact us with
their versions of the Lookers’ Pie. Also, if anyone
knows about the history of the pie we would love to hear
from them. We already know that it was a dish the local
shepherds used to have, so it must have been made from produce
grown and reared locally."
This project is being supported by Marsh Forward, the Marsh’s
local regeneration partnership. Chairman, Peter Woolston,
said, “In our view this is a marvellous way to celebrate
one of the unique aspects of Romney Marsh. Marsh Forward’s
motto is ‘A proud past. A future of opportunities’.
We want to celebrate our past as we prepare the groundwork
for the Marsh’s future. The Lookers’ Pie is
a wonderful example of this. We are really pleased to have
been asked to help the traders with this idea and I look
forward to tucking into a dish of Lookers’ Pie in
the coming months.”
Anyone wishing to send recipes or to give information on
the history of the Lookers’ Pie can send details to
the Traders' Association via Spencer Rolfe, Rolfe’s
Ironmongers, High Street, New Romney.
