A New Romney resident is calling on people
to boycott Tesco's to try to persuade the company to reconsider
its decision to cancel its contract with a local company.
The Romney Marsh Potato Company packs potatoes for the supermarket,
but Tesco has announced it will be ending the agreement
next March. The move could threaten some of the 120 jobs
at the potato company.
The contract is going to Lincolnshire-based Branston Potatoes
who are the supermarket's biggest supplier.
A Tesco spokesman said: "Essentially, there hasn't
been a change to the supplier of our potatoes. We are still
using the same growers, but the Romney Marsh Potato Company
will no longer be packing them for us from March next year."
New Romney resident John Harrison is urging people to boycott
the supermarket.
"I suggest people living in New Romney or the surrounding
area write to Tesco to say they will not be using their
services either online or in store until they decide to
reconsider," he said.
"We should tell them that we are taking a leaf out
of their book and consolidating our suppliers of grocieries
in the same way as they have decided to consolidate their
packers of potatoes.
"It is my intention to encourage others in the area
to do the same. I think I can probably persuade 100 families
or so to take the same action."
