ROMNEY NEWS
More than 1,000 signatures have been collected on the petition
to save New Romney Job Centre from closure.
The petition was started by Helen Knight, of Newchurch,
and it has now been sent to Folkestone and Hythe MP and
Leader of the Opposition Michael Howard. It contained a
total of 1,025 signatures.
The proposed closure was announced by the Department for
Work and Pensions last year as part of a revision of services
provided once the Job Centre Plus scheme is introduced.
If the centre closes, residents on Romney Marsh will have
to travel to Folkestone to sign on, although they have been
told they will be given freephone numbers and a website
address to search for jobs.
Ironically, Mr Howard has said the Conservatives would cut
the number of civil servants if they were returned to power
at the next General Election. He says his party would “privatise
or outsource job centres” but this would not necessarily
result in the closure of such offices.
Mrs Knight, who has thanked everyone who signed the petition,
said the morale of job seekers would drop if the closure
went ahead.
"It's surprising how many people do not even realise
the job centre is to close” she said.
