I have had information that Anti-social youths are becoming a concern in New Romney for residents and visitors. I am having a meeting to address the current situation and to talk about how we can get 'our' children off the streets and into youth clubs - I am willing to start a Rugby club in New Romney so would be grateful if you all could attend. The meeting is on the 5th June 2008 at the Marsh Academy Sports hall. Regards, PC Stevens

Message from: John Marven - 20/11/07

I have recently obtained the death certificate of my Aunt who died in tragic circumstanses in the parish. The date was the 28th August 1949 and she was in a car which overturned, she was 12 years old. Unfortunately the regestrar at that time had a very poor hand, (sorry any relative of Edwin Andrew) and it looks as if she died on the Brenzett and Snargate road (B2080) by Hope Farm. If anyone can enlighten me on the matter or direct me to where I can find information I would be very gratefull. My mother, Aunt Sheila's big sister, died last week and she didnt have a great deal of information. Yours John

Our ancestors in the 1840s may have been in the Union Workhouse in NR. The Dover archives had some data, but not the inmates info.

From the 1861 census we have a Thomas Cassell living with his mother Ann in Hastings. Respectively b in 1846 Brenzett & 1822 in Appledore. He also had a father called Thomas, but I presume he died before 1861 (or ran off?). I cannot find them in the 1851 census at all, but found listed a Thomas Cassle & Ann Cassle, as orphans, living in the workhouse at New Romney. This Thomas was also born in Brenzett in 1845/1846. No mother Ann though? The younger Ann was born in Snave, so all very local.

I would appreciate any information someone might have on a family of Cassells living in that area in 1840-1850s.

If there is also a local history group that would also be interesting.

Message from: Markus Bornheim - Frankfurt, Germany - 13/12/04

Hi everyone at New Romney.

Maybe an unusual question: I had a penfriend in the early eightees, Paul Lighfoot, whose family owned a restaurant in New Romney, The Plumtree House. I think the address was 39 High Street.

Do you know if this still exists? Or if the Lightfoot family still lives in New Romney? Or where they moved to? Would be great if you could send me a short reply.

Greetings from Frankfurt/Germany and kindest regards,

Markus Bornheim

Message from: Jason Martin, Marsh Forward - 12 October 2004

This week I am putting out a call to all the people who would be interested in taking part in the local festival we are setting up for 2005.

This year we worked with the Country Fayre Committee to set up the New Romney Festival, which was very well attended and was on the whole a great success.

This year we would like to build on this year’s success by setting up a Romney Marsh Festival. Once again we are looking for local groups and individuals to put on events that celebrate the area. We already have a dozen events sketched in and even now I’m getting calls from people asking when it’s going to take place in 2005.

We are hoping for a varied week of events held right across Romney Marsh, including: film-making, dance, music, sports, fun, food & drink, history and nature.

Anyone interested in getting involved – either by putting on an event or joining the small festival committee – should contact me at the Romney Resource Centre on 01797 367455.

Also, we are holding an Open Day on Saturday the 16th October to give people an update on what we are doing and to explain what our plans are for the coming years. We will be providing tea and coffee to anyone who comes and visits us in the Assembly Rooms in New Romney. Doors open at 10am., so I look forward to seeing some of you there.

Message from: Jason Martin, Marsh Forward

I realise that it has been quite while since we last mentioned the Cinema Scheme we’re looking to set up.

The latest is that we have finalised our second business plan and have submitted it to various funders for consideration. In fact the Cinema has been included in a major funding bid that Shepway District Council have been putting together. Hopefully if the funding is forthcoming we will be able to begin showing films in January or February.

Our original plan was based around hiring Southlands’ Theatre to run a Saturday Cinema Club, but our proposal was turned down by them. So we have had to change our plan, which has delayed the scheme somewhat.

We will be running a mobile scheme instead, which should make modern films even more accessible to everyone by taking them out into the community.

We have also incorporated a really exciting element into the business plan, which is to run a summer Film Festival, showing films in a circus big top. This has been done in other parts of the country and has been a great success. We will be putting it on to coincide with next year’s New Romney Festival.

Lots of work has gone into getting the scheme to this stage and I would like to thank the volunteers who have helped with the project. I am confident of getting the funding and of setting up something that everyone should be able to enjoy.

Fingers crossed that the funders see it the same way!

Message from: Marsh Forward

Following the success of the 2004 New Romney Festival, Marsh Forward is seeking volunteers to join a small committee to oversee the 2005 Festival, which will run from Saturday 23rd July and will end on Sunday 31st July, the day after the 2005 Country Fayre.

The committee is being set up to encourage local groups to put on events during the week, to coordinate the programme of events and to promote the week to visitors and residents alike. “Several volunteers have already been recruited from this year’s committee; however we need another three or four people to complete the team for next year’s Festival.”

The Festival will be a programme of varied events that will celebrate many aspects of Romney Marsh life, including: sports, nature, history, art, film, performance, food & drink and music.

Jason Martin of Marsh Forward – “One of the highlights of this year’s Festival was the “Battle of the Bands”. I would love to see more events like that in the Festival programme. It would be a massive success for us if we could have a strong youth involvement on the committee and at the events.”

“Several groups have approached us already asking to be involved next year, so we hope that the job of attracting events for the week will be easier than this year.”

“Also, we are pleased to announce that the High Street in New Romney saw a mini-boom during the Festival Week, with most shops reporting an increase in takings. That shows how extremely important events like ours and the Country Fayre are to the wellbeing of the area.”

Marsh Forward is currently seeking funding for the 2005 Festival, which would allow the committee to have a much larger working budget than in 2004.

Anyone interested in joining the committee or interested in putting on an event should contact Jason Martin on 01797 367455.

Message from: Jason Martin, Marsh Forward

On behalf of Marsh Forward, Clive & Frances Wire, Barbara Palmer and all of the Country Fayre Committee that helped I would like to thank everyone who took part in the New Romney Festival Week.

Thank you everyone who showed support for the week by attending the events that were put on for you. I know the Teddy Bears’ Picnic was very successful, as were the Film Show, the launch of Looker’s Pie, the Model Engineering Day, the Bat & Trap Night and the fireworks. For those who didn’t attend, don’t worry, because you will have a chance to join in next year.

Thanks also go out to the funders – Awards for All and the CASK Community Fund for helping us operate this year.

Our thanks also go out to all those who ran events as part of the festival week programme. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and are keen to put on something similar next year.

We will be sending out invitations later this year, because we want to make 2005’s Festival Week bigger and better. We already have support from a number of groups who weren’t able to take part this year due to short notice; and with some of the events we are hoping to run it should be quite a spectacle.

So anyone who has an idea for an event or would like to get involved please get in touch on 01797 367455.

Message from: Marsh Forward

Marsh Forward would like to show their gratitude to the eighty people that came along to the film show they held during the New Romney Festival Week at the Romney Marsh Christian Fellowship Centre.

Also thanks go out to the Centre volunteers who worked so hard to keep everyone fed and watered during the evening.

The night was a great success with everyone enjoying an evening of pure nostalgia, with a return to the old days of film shows on the Marsh.

The centrepiece of the evening was a showing of the only surviving copy of the film “The Adventures in the Hopfields”, supported wonderfully by a hand-picked selection of films plucked from the Movietone archives, including: films on hop picking and beer-making in Kent and East Sussex in the early twentieth century.

The evening, which was run by Marsh Forward, raised a profit of £140, which will be allocated towards future running costs of the New Romney Festival. Barry Littlechild, the owner of “Adventures in the Hopfields” who hosted the event, has donated his fee to the Weald of Kent Hospice.

Marsh Forward are particularly pleased with the response to the evening – “It shows that our Cinema proposal, which we are seeking funding for now, will be very well supported. The success of the hopfields evening will help us make an even stronger case with the potential cinema funders.”

Marsh Forward is a not-for-profit organisation, supported by the Countryside Agency, Shepway District Council and New Romney Town Council, working to regenerate Romney Marsh.

Message from: Jill Poll

Sadly, Claude Poll, past Mayor of New Romney, and Speaker of the Cinque Ports, died on 5th March 2004. His funeral is to be held on 15th March at 11 am at Barham Crematorium. Howard Poll - Claude's son - is my husband, and our first daughter was christened in New Romney Church. Please use our home e-mail address, poll@globalnet.co.uk, if you would like to get in touch.
Many thanks.

Message from: Jason Martin, Marsh Forward

Marsh Forward, the Marsh's local regeneration partnership, is keen to speak to local amateur and professional photographers who are willing to donate a small number of photographs of the area for use in the Partnership's various publications. They are seeking pictures that clearly identify Romney Marsh's features - its buildings, people, landscape, flora & fauna and its history.

Marsh Forward is a not-for-profit organisation, which is working with a wide range of local groups and individuals to attract investment into the area for community-benefit projects. In addition to working with other groups Marsh Forward is also working on their own projects, such as the proposed Community Cinema Scheme, New Romney's High Street Uplift Scheme and a Marsh Promotional Campaign.

Any photographic contributions received will be acknowledged in the
Partnership's publications. The intention is that Marsh Forward's literature is distributed throughout the area, as well as across Kent and the South East.

Anyone interested in discussing this matter further can speak to Marsh Forward's Project Coordinator, Jason Martin, who is working from the Romney Resource Centre in Mountfield Road, New Romney and who can be reached on 01797 367455.
